Marc Jacobs was born in New York City on April 9, 1963.

Graduating from the High School of Art and Design in 1981, Jacobs went on to pursue his education at Parsons School of Design located in New York City.

Awarded the Perry Ellis Gold Thimble Award and the prestigious Design Student of the Year Award, Jacobs displayed his unique talent from the very beginning.

In 1997, Jacobs was appointed creative director of Louis Vuitton where he developed the company's first ready-to-wear line .

In 1989 Jacobs and business partner Robert Duffy joined Perry Ellis as Vice-President of Women’s Design and President respectively. In 1992, the CFDA once again bestowed Jacobs with a distinct honor: the Women’s Designer of the Year Award for his fabled Grunge Collection.

in 1992 he won the Women's Designer of the Year award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

Two years later he launched his eponymous label, supported by models Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista, who worked for free.

Jacobs is a prominent fixture in the New York City celebrity scene, having become something of a celebrity himself. The audience for his fashion shows typically includes celebrities like kim Gordon and Vincent Gallo.

Most of his collections make references to the fashions of past decades from the forties to the eighties.

2007 marked the opening of a Men’s and Women’s Collection store on London’s Mount Street as well as a multi-brand store in historic Savannah, Georgia, a seasonal store in Provincetown, as well as multi brand stores in Tokyo and Moscow. Additionally the company released a new fragrance, Daisy, in September.

In the Fall of 2008 new Marc by Marc Jacobs stores are slated to open in Paris and Madrid and London in early 2009.
