Over the years, Hermes has designed some of the most famous handbags in the world.

First established in 1837, the saddle shop of Thiery Hermès in Paris,quickly became an international success.

At the turn of the century, the company realized that horses were on their way out and began creating luggage, trunks, and bags.

Almost overnight, Hermes handbags were born.

Hermès continues to implement its traditional techniques into its creations.

This French fashion powerhouse creates only the highest quality luxury goods that are worn by celebrities, royalty, and people who have discriminating taste.

Two of the most famous types handbags are the Kelly bag and the Birkin bag.

The 1950s Princess Grace Kelly appeared on the cover of Life with Hermes bag “petit sac haut a courroies” which meant little bag with straps.
She loved these handbags so much that she turned them into a status symbol. Consequently, the classic black square purse took on the name “Kelly” bag.

The “Birkin” handbag was introduced in 1980,after Jane Birkin spoke to the marketing director of Hermes complaining about the “Kelly” bag for its difficulty to open.

Today, a vintage Hermes bag can sell at auction for about $10,000.

Authenticity can sometimes be determined by the presence of these characteristics:

    - Appropriate pricing - a Hermes bag in any vendable condition will never sell for less than 50% of its original value.
      - Gilt or blind stamped in the front face under the tap: "Hermès Paris, Made in France"
    - Craftsman's marks and letter year of manufacture stamped in a square underside of right belt. The year of manufacture should be consistent with condition and history of bag
    - Interior leather zipper tag parallel with zipper hardware, not perpendicular
    - Feel of superior leather. The touch and weight of fine leather are not easily duplicated.
