American Luggage Works has been founded from the immigrant Sol Koffler in Providence, Rhode Island in either 1932. This man was determined to produce luggage priced at $1 in the midst of the Great Depression.

In 1970, this company launched a new ad campaign, highlighting the durability of its product by unleashing a "gorilla" (actually a man in a costume) on it.



In 1993, American Tourister was acquired by Astrum International, which also made Samsonite luggage. Astrum was renamed the Samsonite Corporation two years later. So, American Tourister has now become a lower-end version of its Samsonite sister brand.

Personally, I used an American Tourister carry-on for a 5-leg journey from Honolulu to Kansas and back, as well as a round-trip conference from Honolulu to Phoenix.The suitcase still looks brand new. The wheels turn so easily, even though this isn't one of the spinner suitcases. All the zippers and straps are strong and durable. I really recommend it.
